Behind the Magic – Stretching Room

☆Behind the Magic – Stretching Room☆

To celebrate 51 years of The Haunted Mansion we are going to take a look at how one of it’s most famous illusions works. First a bit of Background. Haunted Mansion is a dark ride found in Disneyland, Disney World and Tokyo Disneyland with variations at Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland. It is a family friendly ride in terms of movement but younger  riders may find it a bit spooky, especially the stretching room which we look at here.

This is the most iconic part of the ride you step into a room which stretches, the door you enter in disappears, light’s go out. There’s spooky sounds and narration before the stretching finally ends and a door appears to exit.

☆Spoilers – If you don’t want the magic spoiled, stop here, if you want to know how it works, keep reading☆

You’re still here! Ok, lets break down some of the secrets.

☆The Mansion front you see outside houses the Stretching Room only, the ride is essentially in a container beyond the front.

☆If you’ve ever ridden the ride you will remember you exit by an ascending moving walk way, this is because you went down in the first place. The stretching room is just a large elevator! The ceiling moves in Disney World, the rest is just a cage, the floor moves in Disneyland.

☆The room is octagonal so that it’s even harder to forget how you came in when the new exit does appear.

☆The mantlepiece and the gargoyles cover moving pieces of the room so you don’t see them. The mantlepiece also moves and stays proportionate to the ceiling to compelte the stretching effect.

☆Speakers are hidden around the room inside the mantlepiece with lights on top to illuminate the paintings

☆The sound you hear is loud and atmospheric to make it sound like the room is stretching a creaking. It also covers up the sound of the room (elevator) mechanics.

☆The tops and bottoms of the paintings are stationary, as well as the wallpaper top and bottom. If you look closely they actually stand out from the wall. This allows the stretched painting to appear as the room “moves”.

☆The ceiling is just painted fabric, it turns invisible when lit. As for the body that appears, it’s there the whole time, but only appears when the fabric is lit and windows appear at the sides shining more light on it.

☆Why are you told to move to the centre of the room? Because the exit door slides open, and they wouldn’t want a leaning guest to fall through it!

And that’s all there is to it. Not so scary really. We still love to ride it though! We wish Haunted Mansion a Happy Anniversary and hope to ride it again soon.
